The gallery is sad to learn that the remarkable writer and critic, John Russell Taylor, has died, aged 90.
As the film critic, theatre critic, and art critic for the Times newspaper over decades he contributed significantly to popular post war culture.
A very informative Times Obituary (12th September) concentrates on the close relationship with Alfred Hitchcock as his official biographer. The range and entertaining erudition in over 40 books is impressive, and includes ‘Anger and After’ (1962) which defined the new wave of drama in the fifties.
John was a great friend and supporter of this gallery’s range of artistic preoccupations and contributed to our literature by brilliantly accepting our commission to write the biographies of Muriel Pemberton (1993) and Peter Coker (2002).
