'At the beginning of the millennium, they decided to have this big exhibition about St Paul’s. They invited lots of great artists, like Ken Howard and Tom Coates, and it was about St Paul’s but everybody was given a different aspect. Mine was ‘life on the steps of St Paul’s’, and it couldn’t just be the steps – it had to be life on the steps, in the 21st century. So I went there at night and it was wonderful, the light. I painted all of these people – This guy actually worked for St Paul’s and he would be cleaning, and you’d get a lot of these office workers going past ... and there was a homeless guy sleeping behind me while I painted, it was quite comforting and he was really nice to me. It was part of a series of four, I did a morning, afternoon, evening and night. One thing that was nice, was out of everyone they chose mine to make Christmas cards out of those four paintings, square greetings cards, and apparently they were very popular.'
